Auguste Rodin: Sculpture 'Pierre de Wissant', bronze version

Product information "Auguste Rodin: Sculpture 'Pierre de Wissant', bronze version"

Rodin's famous 'Burghers of Calais' are a historical symbol of self-sacrifice: during the Hundred Years' War, Calais was besieged by the English fleet and offered heroic resistance for 11 months until the inhabitants, suffering from famine, offered to surrender. King Edward III accepted on the condition that six citizens volunteered to be executed on behalf of the town: 'bareheaded and unshod - dressed in the poor sinner's smock and with a rope around their necks'. At the request of Queen Philippine, Edward III spared the lives of the brave men and refrained from destroying the city. 1886 was the first time that Auguste Rodin depicted the courageous deeds of ordinary citizens rather than the powerful. Today, a cast of the life-size sculpture group stands as a national monument in England and France behind the Houses of Parliament in London, in the garden of the Musée Rodin in Paris - and in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Faithful museum replica. Edition in fine bronze, cast using the lost wax technique, chiselled, polished and patinated by hand. Height 43 cm. Weight approx. 6 kg.
