The whole world was excited when Howard Carter finally announced the discovery of the intact tomb of Tutankhamun on 4 November 1922. And the result was overwhelming: over 5,000 individual finds, magnificent grave goods made of pure gold and, above all, the legendary death mask of the young pharaoh were the reward for the greatest endeavours. Tutankhamun's mummy, completely bandaged with linen bandages, wore the mask made of pure gold over his head and shoulders.
