'Among Kolbe's sculptures from the collection of the Kunsthalle Bremen, the 'Malaiin' stands out as a standing figure, which has a barely noticeable movement in its posture. The artist thus achieves a restrained approach to the viewer, which is reversed in its effect by the introverted facial expression of the young woman depicted. Tension thus becomes stillness. In an extremely concise modelling, Kolbe also sought to achieve uniformity of form without disturbing shadow effects. (Prof. Dr Christoph Grunenberg Director of the Kunsthalle Bremen)
