Exclusive ars mundi anniversary edition for the 100th birthday of Loriot. Bernhard-Viktor Christoph-Carl von Bülow was born on 12 November 1923 in Brandenburg an der Havel. We will be celebrating his 100th birthday at the end of 2023. As the humourist 'Loriot', he was already a figure of the century during his lifetime. There is a technical reason for this. Loriot was a precision worker, a precision mechanic of humour who mastered the exact stroke of a caricature, the 'timing' of a sketch or the placement of a punch line like no other. In Loriot's case, precision mechanics necessarily included sensitivity. Loriot was a keen observer, and from this eye he developed a sense for the comic that was just a breath away from the seemingly normal and accepted. He was a clever, mischievously smiling observer who opened our eyes to the absurdity of everyday life situations. His themes: A conversation that derails. An absurd situation in which everyone involved is struggling to maintain form. The desperate attempt to do everything right and therefore appear a little comical or even fail. But he would never have doubted the value of formal politeness itself, quite the opposite. His floral cavalier may be somewhat traditional and overly concerned with form and convention. He is an amiable character. Loriot loved people by making us laugh at them. Especially the odd ones.
