Product information "Michelangelo Buonarroti: Sculpture 'Dying Slave' (1513), reduction in artificial marble"
Michelangelo created this life-size figure on direct commission from Pope Julius II, who gave the artist a completely free hand. Michelangelo created a symbol of the earthly bondage of man and the freedom of art: despite its many expressive gestures, the figure cannot step out of the block of marble. He remains a slave to his existence. However, the great freedom with which Michelangelo sculpted every fibre of the body and the almost voluptuous movement convey a different message: man may be bound, but the spirit and art are free! Alongside the 'David', it is probably the 'Dying Slave' that established Michelangelo's legendary reputation. Original: Musée du Louvre, Paris Reduction, moulded in artificial marble. Height 110 cm, weight approx. 65 kg.
