Paul Wunderlich: Sculpture 'Victoria' (2008), bronze

Victoria fascinates with the simplicity of its form, which can be grasped at a glance. On closer inspection, however, you realise how deliberately every detail has been designed. The billowing skirt indicates the forward thrust of the sculpture. Its curved surface is brought to life by the contours and three folds in the garment. While the front contour of the skirt runs straight downwards, albeit at a slight angle, the rear contour is structured in gentle curves. The smoothness of the gown is matched by the beaded surface of the bodice, accentuated by the geometry of the bust. And then there is the wing: it is remarkable how differentiated Wunderlich arranges the feathers in order to find a form that deviates from the usual depictions. And the colours: the gold of the skirt and the wing, which reflects the surrounding light, the black of the plinth and the upper edge of the wing, which borders the sculpture at the top and bottom, and the subdued grey-brown of the upper body, are further elements that differentiate the sculpture and yet, as a matter of course, form a unity. At 77 cm high, Victoria is a stately sculpture. Its weight of 22 kilograms indicates its considerable volume. Sculpture in fine bronze 2008, patinated, partially polished.
