Allegrain, then professor and later director of the Académie Royale, created it after years of intensive detailed studies on many models in a graceful late baroque pose with a first hint of incipient classicism. The critics struggled to find words for their enthusiasm, and in the Salon of 1767 Diderot celebrated the statue as 'the most beautiful and perfect female figure of modern times'.
