Product information "Smelt scale fish (Lepidotus elvensis)"
Stone witnesses to prehistoric times: At the time of the first flowering plants, when life was taking off, organisms in the vast lagoons of the Jurassic Sea were transformed into minerals, into natural works of art and stone witnesses to ancient communities. Their study provided the basis for evolutionary research. Our faithful reproductions of famous and unique fossils give you a deep insight into the life of the primeval world. The bony fish Lepidotus was widespread worldwide in the Mesozoic era and reached lengths of almost 2 metres. Its striking mother-of-pearl-like lustre came from ganoid, which was deposited on the strong scales as it grew. The button-like teeth - known as toadstones in medieval folklore - were probably used to crack mussel shells. Jurassic/Lias, approx. 170 million years ago. Place of discovery: Holzmaden. Original: Slate. Natural replica in stone mass, patinated. Size 97 x 43 cm.
