Marcus Meyer: Sculpture 'Mountain Gorilla', bronze
Marcus Meyer: Sculpture 'Mountain Gorilla', bronze
In three decades of intensive work, Marcus Meyer has repeatedly explored the themes of man and nature and, not least, ecological issues. His material is wood, or rather: woods, because the impressive variety of animal depictions corresponds to a great variety of types of wood, which Meyer moulds into works that are less representations than character studies. In doing so, Meyer hardly deviates from the mimetic principle of representational accuracy. At the same time, however, he emphasises the artificiality of his works, for example by deliberately cutting out materials. At times, this goes so far that little more than the silhouette of the depicted animal remains, even though it is precisely worked out. In the case of his mountain gorilla, it is the reduction to a torso that fully emphasises the 'essence' of the animal. The powerful mountain gorilla leans on its muscular, massive arms and looks fearlessly and fiercely determined into the world. Arms, shoulder, head - that's all Meyer needs to perfectly capture the character of this endangered species. Original: ebony, height 45 cm, privately owned. Sculpture in fine bronze, cast using the lost wax technique, chiselled, polished and patinated by hand. Moulded from the original. Limited edition of 99 pieces, numbered, signed and hallmarked with the foundry and ars mundi stamp. With numbered certificate of authenticity and limited edition certificate. Size including base approx. 44 x 35 x 28 cm (H/W/D). Weight approx. 16 kg. ars mundi exclusive edition.
