Freedom is feminine. This refers not only to its grammatical gender, but also to its traditional imagery. Like so many things, this begins in Roman mythology. Libertas, who represents freedom, is depicted here as a richly adorned female figure, and one world-famous 'daughter' of this Libertas is the Statue of Liberty in New York. In art history, there is a no less iconic version: Delacroix's barricade painting 'Liberty Leading the People' from 1830 shows her in the form of a half-exposed fighter leading the people to political emancipation - vulnerable, but charging forward indomitable. For Delacroix, freedom is not a state, but a goal to be achieved and defended. Wirth's 'Freedom' is in this tradition. His version, executed as a nude, also shows freedom in dynamic motion; here, too, it storms ahead. The pose, reminiscent of a finish line, is no coincidence: Wirth shows the goal, knowing full well that the revolutionary triad is still an unfinished project: freedom, equality and - let's call it that at this point - sisterhood. 'It's the details that count' is the motto of sculptor Leo Wirth, and it is clear from each of his works how seriously he takes this. This also applies to his portrayal of everyday people, in whom he is particularly interested; people that any of us could meet on the street. 'Modern Life' demonstrates this par excellence: the young couple appear everyday and emphatically contemporary in every respect, and their work is detailed far beyond clothing, accessories, fabric structure and drapery. Because when Wirth talks about the details that matter, he is not just referring to the craftsmanship, but above all to the realisation of the smallest, precisely observed gestures, which he picks up on and makes visible in the artwork: only the casual gait of the young man and his arm casually draped over his companion's shoulder and her self-confident gaze into the world make 'Modern Life' really come alive. They are clearly a couple 'at eye level' who feel they belong together - whether in friendship or love - and who walk through life with great affection for each other. A moment of peace and relaxation: Leo Wirth's 'Reading'. The sculptor Leo Wirth finds his inspiration in people's everyday lives, but always adds his own interpretations to his sculptures. In his design, he makes recognisable reference to the natural proportions of people and attaches great importance to an illustrative elaboration of the contours. Wirth's sculpture 'Reading' is also orientated towards the real beauty of the female body. It shows a young woman concentrating on reading a book and thus symbolises peace and relaxation.
