Georg Kolbe: Sculpture 'Grief' (1921), bronze
Georg Kolbe: Sculpture 'Grief' (1921), bronze
In 1912, Georg Kolbe caused a sensation in Berlin with his 'Dancer' - his most famous work to date. The theme of (expressive) dance and expressive, even ecstatic movement pervaded his sculptural work well into the 1920s, as in his Kneeling Woman created in 1921. In the decade between these two works, Kolbe was awarded the title of professor (1918) and - together with Ernst Barlach and Wilhelm Lehmbruck - was admitted to the Prussian Academy of Arts (1919). In the 1920s, he was undisputedly regarded as one of the most important sculptors in Germany, and so he also attracted the attention of major art collectors around the world. A copy later found its way into the legendary art collection of Nelson Rockefeller; it was the model for our exclusive edition. Original: Rockefeller Collection/The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). Sculpture in fine bronze, patinated. Cast by hand using the lost wax technique. Moulded directly from the original. Limited edition of 199 pieces, individually numbered and signed and bearing the foundry mark. Size 38 x 52.5 x 23 cm (h/w/d). Weight approx. 11 kg. ars mundi exclusive edition.

Georg Kolbe: Sculpture 'Malaiin' (1916), reduction in bronze
Georg Kolbe's 'Malaiin': ars mundi exclusive edition, published in collaboration with the Kunsthalle Bremen. Sculpture in fine bronze, cast using the lost wax technique, chiselled, polished and patinated by hand. Moulded directly from the original and reduced in size (reduction). Limited edition of 199 copies, individually numbered and bearing the signature and foundry mark taken from the original. ars mundi exclusive edition, published in collaboration with the Kunsthalle Bremen. With numbered certificate of authenticity and limitation. Format 40 x 11.5 x 8 cm (H/W/D). Weight 3 kg. 'Among Kolbe's sculptures from the collection of the Kunsthalle Bremen, the 'Malaiin' stands out as a standing figure, which has a barely noticeable movement in its posture. The artist thus achieves a restrained approach to the viewer, which is reversed in its effect by the introverted facial expression of the young woman depicted. Tension thus becomes stillness. In an extremely concise modelling, Kolbe also sought to achieve uniformity of form without disturbing shadow effects. (Prof. Dr Christoph Grunenberg Director of the Kunsthalle Bremen)

Georg Kolbe: Sculpture 'Young Woman' (1903/04), reduction in bronze
Georg Kolbe: Sculpture 'Young Woman' (1903/04), reduction in bronze
One of his early masterpieces: Georg Kolbe's 'Young Woman'. ars mundi exclusive edition, published in collaboration with the Kunsthalle Bremen. It was his encounters with the artist Louis Tuaillon and the works of Rodin that turned Georg Kolbe (1877-1947) into a sculptor. He had studied painting, but from 1900 onwards he devoted himself primarily to sculpture. From the outset, his nudes differed from those of the academic sculptors of the time. He contrasted the depictions of human beings, which were often frozen into a catalogue of poses, with postures that refer to the new modern dance and appear graceful and natural, especially in the consciously artistic expression of his models. Kolbe's 'Young Woman' from 1903/1904 is one of his early masterpieces. Sculpture in fine bronze, patinated. Cast by hand using the lost wax technique. Directly moulded from the original and reduced in size (reduction). Limited edition of 199 copies, individually numbered and bearing the signature and foundry mark taken from the original. ars mundi exclusive edition, published in collaboration with the Kunsthalle Bremen. With numbered certificate of authenticity and limitation. Size 39.5 x 11 x 16 cm (h/w/d). Weight 4.35 kg. 'I am fascinated by the subtle complexity of this sculpture. On the one hand, Georg Kolbe's female nude appears light and prancing. With her free leg, the implied turn and the head turned away. On the other hand, she appears almost insecure and evasive. The figure thus combines a classical pose with a modern conception of sculpture at the beginning of the 20th century. (Prof. Dr Christoph Grunenberg, Director of the Kunsthalle Bremen)
