Knuth Seim: Sculpture 'Stargazer', bronze
Knuth Seim: Sculpture 'Stargazer', bronze
Astronomy is the beginning of all science, and today, as thousands of years ago, people look up at the heavens with fascination. Knuth Seim's 'Stargazer' is no exception - armed with a long telescope, he gazes at the glittering firmament. Seim depicts him with almost dramatic body tension: His feet are slightly angled for a secure stance and his head is tilted far back as he tries to capture his target. With the Stargazer, Seim, born in 1961 in Karl-Marx-Stadt (Chemnitz), returns to his artistic roots. The trained stonemason and studied sculptor has mostly worked in a simple, reduced formal language since a study visit to Senegal, but here he once again realises his motif in a completely figurative and realistic manner. The figure was originally created as a design for a group of sculptures for Märkischer Platz in the 'City of Optics' in Rathenow. Sculpture cast in bronze using the lost wax technique, chiselled and patinated. Limited edition of 199 pieces, signed and numbered. Format 12 x 40 x 10 cm (W/H/D). Weight approx. 2.5 kg. Exclusively at ars mundi.

Kurt Arentz: Sculpture 'Donkey couple', reduction in bronze
Kurt Arentz: Sculpture 'Donkey couple', reduction in bronze
The donkey as a personality by Kurt Arentz - exclusively at ars mundi. Kurt Arentz's (1934-2014) reputation as a sculptor rests on two pillars: his portraits of famous personalities and his depictions of animals made him internationally recognised. In both subjects, the artist went beyond the mere 'portrait'. While Arentz formed his motifs freehand, he was not only in search of a realistic depiction, but was above all interested in portraying character - in both humans and animals. The claim of 'likeness' is therefore not merely an anatomical one, even if Arentz mastered this task like hardly anyone else. And just as many a person portrayed by him confirmed to the artist that they recognised their 'inner self' in a bust made by Arentz, the artist also aimed at the character of the subject in his depictions of animals. His young pair of donkeys, for example, is not only an impressively precise depiction of the foals, captured exactly in their anatomy and movement, but also a depiction of their playfulness and carefree joie de vivre. Just like the people portrayed by Arentz, they too are 'personalities' and recognisable as such. With this sensitive and heart-warming character study, he has created a loving monument to the sociable, loyal companion. Sculpture in fine bronze, cast using the lost wax technique, chiselled, polished and patinated by hand. Taken directly from the original and reduced in size. Limited edition of 199 pieces, numbered, signed and hallmarked with the foundry and ars mundi stamp. With numbered certificate of authenticity and limitation certificate. Format approx. 21 x 24.5 x 10 cm (h/w/d). Weight approx. 3.2 kg. ars mundi exclusive edition.

Kurt Arentz: Sculpture 'Donkey foal', bronze
Kurt Arentz: Sculpture 'Donkey foal', bronze
The German sculptor Kurt Arentz (1934-2014) was able to bring his very own side to the classic subject of animal sculpture. Although Arentz always emphasised the typical features of the animals, he never strived for naturalistic perfection. He left the surfaces uneven and visibly textured, giving each of his figures a very individual character - as is the case with this donkey foal, which is attentively observing its surroundings and planning new journeys of discovery. Sculpture in fine bronze, cast using the lost wax technique, chiselled, patinated and polished by hand. Limited world edition of 25 copies, numbered and signed. Size approx. 11 x 18 x 21 cm (h/w/d). Kurt Arentz: Sculpture 'Dove of Peace', bronze
Kurt Arentz: Sculpture 'Dove of Peace', bronze
Kurt Arentz's works are neither true-to-life representations nor ingenious abstractions, which is precisely why they achieve the greatest expressive power. The artist penetrates to the actual essence, to the species-typical nature of each modelled animal. This also applies to the symbol of world peace, his dove of peace, which is per se both a symbol and an animal. The artist, who experienced the war as a child, provides it with the abstract peace attribute of the globe, but at the same time leaves the bird's naturalistic form (moulded in his artistic handwriting). Sculpture made of fine bronze, cast using the lost wax technique, patinated by hand and partially gilded. Black diabase base. Limited edition of 499 pieces, numbered and signed. Exclusively at ars mundi. Format 20 x 26 x 19 cm (W/H/D), base format 8 x 8 x 8 cm (W/H/D). Weight 4 kg.
