The 'Radschläger' is considered the oldest tradition of the city of Düsseldorf and has become one of its most recognisable landmarks. The legend surrounding the origin of the custom dates back to 1288, when Düsseldorf was granted city rights after the Battle of Worringen. The inhabitants, and especially the children, are said to have done cartwheels in the streets for joy. To this day, an international cartwheeling competition is held every year on Königsallee or at the Rheinwerft. The artist Gisela von Wittich - v. Poncet lives in Düsseldorf. Her bronze cartwheeler symbolises a lively joie de vivre: at the moment of maximum energy, the artist captures the movement in a playful and light-handed manner. Loving details emphasise the dynamism of the sculpture: the trouser legs that have slipped down, the jacket that has been thrown open, the curled ringlets or the waving head of curls. Sculpture made of fine bronze, cast using the lost wax technique. Patinated and polished by hand. Limited edition of 499 pieces, numbered and signed. Size 21 x 27 x 9.3 cm (W/H/D), weight 3 kg.
